Spent a year at Auburn and transferred to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Graduated with a B.S. in newspaper journalism. The family moved from Huntsville between my freshman and sophomore years of college. After working at a couple of daily newspapers during college, decided the meager reporter wages I was being offered weren’t enough to get married on. Came to DC to seek my fortune, and ended up working at a trade association. Got married the year after graduation to a Kentucky girl I met at UT. Worked at several different trade associations in Washington. To this day, when people ask my dad what I do, he tells them: “He’s a lobbyist.” That’s not entirely accurate. But it’s part of it, and close enough I suppose. Got divorced at 31. No kids that time around. Met the right girl – Clare Nolen of Annandale, Virginia. Got remarried at 33. Settled in McLean, Virginia, and started cranking out sons. Nolen is 13. Gus is 11. Max is 8. They are great kids, who, thankfully emerged from the genetic stew pot with their mother’s brains, study habits, and looks. Banged my head against the wall working for several trade associations until I persuaded one to hire me as its president. Did that for three years. Jumped ship to another. I have been president of that group, the American Wholesale Marketers Association, for the past four years. Spend my weekends hanging out with the family, shuttling kids to soccer, baseball, basketball and bowling, etc. Play geezer rock in my basement with some pals. Hang out at the Delaware shore a couple of hours away from DC. Life is good.
