Don Houston Howie, 47, of Huntsville died Wednesday at Huntsville Hospital. He was the son of Dr. Virgil Mitchell Howie and Evelyn Madge McCraw Howie of Huntsville. He is survived by his wife, Aletha Miller Howie; and two children, Houston and Maggie Howie of Monte Sano Mountain. He is also survived by four sisters and three brothers. Memorials may be made to College Sense in the honor of Don Howie for Houston and Maggie Howie, c/o Aletha Howie, 4316 Chickasaw Dr., Huntsville, Alabama 35801. A celebration of his life will be held at Monte Sano State Park at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Don was my first debate partner and one of my closest friends in high school. I even lived with his wonderful family for a while after my parents moved to Florida. Don had such a good and kind heart and was such a gentle and loving human. Don was smart and funny and irreverent. I wish that we had stayed close after school, but the great pictures helped me remember what a great friend he was and his beautiful family made me smile. - Barry Ragsdale
