April 9, 1914 - April 29, 2009
She was a daughter of the late Dr. Allen D. McLain and Willie Hafley McLain of Huntsville, where Dr. McLain served as a physician and Mrs. McLain was a teacher in the Huntsville City School system for more than 40 years.
Miss McLain attended local schools and graduated with a degree in education from Montevallo College. The years immediately following graduation were scarce in teaching opportunities, so she accepted a position in the mid-1930s with the CCC in South Alabama instructing young girls from Appalachia in real life skills, such as sewing, cooking and personal hygiene. She returned to Huntsville and taught in the public schools for many years, retiring in early 1979 as the physical education teacher at Huntsville High. She was also the sponsor for the girls Cheerleader Squad, and taught the first girls soccer classes in the Huntsville area.
"Macy" was a member of various civic clubs and was very active in the Pilot Club. She was also fond of animals, and enjoyed cats as her home companions. She was a life -long member of the First United Methodist Church in Huntsville. Miss McLain loved to travel, and her fondest memories were trips to China and Italy.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Burtie McLain Whiteside of Oxford. Survivors include her nephew, John Allan Whiteside of San Jose, Calif., and a niece, Gay Whiteside Cooke of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and their families.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Coy Hallmark officiating.
The family would like to thank Macy's neighbors, Home Instead Senior Care, and Hospice Family Care for their caring and support.
Memorials may be made to Hospice Family Care.
